Dry Eye Self-Assessment

Take this self-assessment to receive preliminary advice on how to care for dry eyes at home.

Let's Get to Know Dry Eyes

When you have dry eyes, you may experience stinging, irritation, discomfort, and intermittent blurred vision. The more you strain your eyes, the worse the symptoms become. Once you rest, the symptoms usually alleviate. Some people with dry eye syndrome feel irritable, anxious, and uneasy because the condition directly affects their mood and mental well-being.

Let’s understand our tears—something very close to us—and learn about the common causes of dry eyes in most people, as well as proper eye care practices.

Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome:

  • Eye discomfort and irritation
  • Feeling like there is dust or a foreign body in the eye
  • Intermittent blurred vision

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome:

  • Aging
  • Blocked oil glands (meibomian glands) in the eyelids
  • Prolonged eye strain
  • Decreased blinking frequency
  • Taking certain medications

Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome:

  • Using artificial tears
  • Applying warm compresses to the eyelids
  • Blinking more frequently
  • Adjusting your environment

In addition to understanding the causes and proper care for your eyes, learning how to correctly apply eye drops is highly important to maximize effectiveness, value, and savings.

Proper Steps for Applying Eye Drops:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Tilt your head back.
3. Open the bottle cap, being careful not to let your hands touch the dropper tip.
4. Gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pouch.
5. Rest the hand holding the bottle on the hand pulling your eyelid to accurately judge the distance.
6. Look up and squeeze **1 drop** into the lower eyelid pouch. Ensure the bottle tip does not touch your eye.
7. One drop is sufficient; applying more is a waste.
8. Close your eyes for about 2-3 minutes after applying the drop. If you are using more than one type of medication, wait at least 5-10 minutes between each application.

Common Misconceptions About Eye Drops
(These can lead to inefficiency, waste, and safety issues)

  1. Not closing your eyes after applying drops: This prevents the medication from taking full effect. We recommend closing your eyes for at least 2-3 minutes. If you apply the drops and immediately resume activities without closing your eyes, it is almost as if you didn’t use the medication at all.
  2. Applying two different medications back-to-back: If you have two different eye drops to use at the same time and you apply the second one immediately after the first, they will wash each other out, reducing the effectiveness of both.
  3. Applying more than 1 drop per dose: Some hope that more drops mean more medication enters the eye. In reality, one drop is more than enough to fill the eyelid pouch. The excess will simply spill out. Therefore, using two drops is unnecessary and wasteful.
  4. Avoiding drops because they cause a bitter taste in the throat: Some medications do have a bitter taste. It is completely normal to taste them because the eye has a natural duct connecting to the nasal cavity and throat. In fact, if this duct is blocked, it can lead to abnormal tear drainage issues.

We hope this information helps you apply your eye drops safely, effectively, and economically!
